(Close the platform, cut your size one tier, and let the math do the rest)
Short answer: Stop trading. Walk away for the rest of the session, then come back with your risk per trade cut by one tier. Three losses in a row is not an emergency. Your reaction to it is.
Why A Losing Streak Is Not a Verdict
Most traders read three losses as proof. Either the strategy is broken, or the market now owes them a win. Neither is true.
Here is the logic. At a 50% win rate, three straight losses show up 1 time in 8 (0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 = 12.5%). Trade long enough and you will see streaks. They are the cost of doing business.
The streak is not what kills accounts. The next trade is. After losses, your brain wants the money back, so you size up, widen the stop, or take a setup you would normally skip.
The research backs this up. A study of retail forex traders found that past performance did not predict their future success, yet they changed their trade size sharply based on recent results (Ben-David, Birru and Prokopenya, Review of Finance). Your last three trades tell you very little about your next one. Your sizing rule should not care about them either.
The One Decision: Your Risk Per Trade
Everything hangs on one number you set before the streak arrives: the percentage of your account you risk on each trade. Here are three tiers on a $50,000 account:
- Conservative, 0.25%: $125 per trade. Three losses cost $375.
- Balanced, 0.5%: $250 per trade. Three losses cost $750.
- Aggressive, 1%: $500 per trade. Three losses cost $1,500.
Fewpips prohibits any single trade idea from losing more than 2% of the starting balance. None of these tiers gets near that ceiling, and that is the point. You want slippage to have room to happen.
Your post-streak rule is simple. Drop one tier. Aggressive becomes Balanced. Balanced becomes Conservative. If you are already Conservative, keep your size and take the rest of the day off. Step back up only after you have followed your plan for two trades, win or lose.
The Math, Step by Step
Take a $50,000 Fewpips CFD 1-Step Challenge account, sized at Aggressive. Assume the day starts at $50,000 equity and all three losses land that day.
- Risk per trade: $50,000 x 1% = $500
- Three losses: 3 x $500 = $1,500, which is 3% of the account
- Daily loss limit: 4% x $50,000 start-of-day equity = $2,000
- Room left today: $2,000 - $1,500 = $500
- Drop to Balanced: $50,000 x 0.5% = $250 per trade. Two full losses would take you exactly to the limit, so plan for 1 trade, not 2
In plain English: risk per trade = account size x risk percentage, and trades you can afford = room left today/risk per trade, rounded down, minus one as a buffer.
Watch Out for Revenge Sizing
The single biggest mistake is doubling your size to win it back. Double that $500, and you are risking $1,000 per trade, which is also the 2% trade-idea cap, with only $500 of room left. One loss ends your day. Worse, the daily limit counts open trades too. A floating loser eats your room before you ever close it. You are not recovering. You are gambling with a smaller cushion.
Fewpips has no time limit on its CFD challenges, so nothing forces you to chase a loss back today.
How This Connects to The Platform Rules
Your sizing has to live inside two limits. The first is the daily loss limit: 4% on the 1-Step and 2-Step Challenges, 5% on the 3-Step. CFD Instant accounts have none. On evaluation accounts, hitting it is a soft breach. Your account is paused until the server reset, and a second hit within 7 days breaches the account and closes it.
The second is the Maximum Loss Limit. It is trailing, tied to your highest equity, and it only moves up. On a $50,000 1-Step account, it is 9%, or $4,500. On a fresh account, that puts the floor at $45,500. Our guide to loss limits explained walks through how the two interact, and the Fewpips trading rules have the full tables.

How The Advice Changes as Your Account Moves
Percentage sizing adjusts itself. When your account grows, each percent is a bigger dollar amount, and your floor trails up with your peak equity. When your account shrinks, each percent gets smaller automatically.
That second part matters. The floor never moves down after losses, so your cushion shrinks as you lose. Percentage sizing shrinks with it, so a bad week costs fewer dollars than the last one. No willpower required: the rule does the adjusting for you, and that is why the approach corrects itself. Our position sizing guide covers how to apply this to your own balance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I Stop Trading After 3 Losses in a Row?
Yes, at least for the session. Review each trade against your plan, not against your feelings. If all three followed your rules, you had a normal streak. If any broke them, that is the real problem to fix.
How Much Should I Reduce My Position Size After a Losing Streak?
Drop one tier, for example from 1% to 0.5% risk per trade. Stay there until you have taken two trades by the book. Do not size up to recover.
How Do I Stop Revenge Trading?
Decide your post-streak rule before you trade, and write it down. A fixed stop-for-the-day trigger removes the decision when you are least able to make it well. Our breakdown of why traders fail prop firm challenges shows how often this one habit is the cause.
What Happens if I Hit the Daily Loss Limit at Fewpips?
On evaluation accounts, it is a soft breach. Your account is paused until the server reset. Hit it again within 7 days, and the account is breached and closed. The Fewpips FAQ has the details.
The Fewpips Take
Three losses are a data point, not a diagnosis. Cut your size, shorten your day, and protect the account that is still standing. The traders who last are not the ones who never lose three in a row. They are the ones who treat the fourth trade like a stranger. Read what funded traders say about Fewpips and see the mindset for yourself.
The Fewpips CFD 1-Step Challenge starts at $59 for a $5K account, with a 10% profit target and no time limit - size smart and get funded.
